The New National Gallery in Berlin

The New National Gallery in Berlin

The New National Gallery houses European painting and sculpture of the 20th century from classical modernism to the art of the 60s.

Among them are works by artists such as Picasso, Klee, Feininger, Dix and Kokoschka. The collection focuses on works by artists of Cubism, Expressionism, Bauhaus and Surrealism. Works by Picasso, Gris, Leger and Laurens show the development of Cubist art. Expressionism is represented by works by Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff and Heckel, and Surrealist painting by artists such as Ernst, Dalí and Miró.
The ceiling of the Neue Nationalgalerie, built as a lattice of black lacquered steel girders, served as an exhibition space for the installation of the Neue Nationalgalerie, an installation of long rows of LCD displays by the artist Jenny Holzer from 2001, which continuously rolled abstract patterns along its entire length.

Brief history of the Pergamonmuseum

In 1945, the Berlin magistrate decided to establish a collection of the twentieth century. Originally, the former Landwehrkasino was the gallery's exhibition venue. When it became clear with the construction of the Wall in 1961 that it would no longer be possible in the long term to bring together the collections from East and West, it was decided to merge the two fuselage collections and erect the representative new building in the newly founded Kulturforum Berlin, which had been commissioned to Mies van der Rohe.
A renovation project with a total volume of €101 million began in 2015 and is expected to last three years, during which time the museum will be closed.
