The Bebelplatz is located in the district Mitte at the boulevard "Unter den Linden" and
it is one of the most beautiful of the city. The place was built from 1741 to 1743 at the opera. The place was called "Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Platz", named after the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, from 1910 to 1947. During World War II the original place was totally destroyed. After the war it was rebuilt with new buildings in historic facades.
On the 10th May 1933 the Nazis held their burning of books at this place. Books from Sigmund Freud, Erich Kastner, Heinrich Mann, Karl Marx and Kurt Tucholsky became victims of the flames and the unspeakable ignorance. The German Student Union with approximately 70,000 students, professors and members of the SA and SS planned, cried and conducted this havoc. Today a monument remembers the illiterate spectacle. On one point of the place the floor opens and the visitors look into an empty room, see empty shelves of the "perished library".
